The Logistics and Supply Chain Skills Group (LSCSG) was established in 2019 to support the promotion of careers, skills development and sustainable employment in the Logistics and Supply Chain sectors in Ireland. The LSCSG was set up following recommendations made by the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs. The Group includes key stakeholder representatives from government, academia, and industry, and is currently chaired by the Department of Transport, on the basis of the Department's links to the wider transport industry. The Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science and the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment also play a key role in the work of the Group. The Group provides a forum for practical action and collaboration aimed at addressing the skills needs of the sector.
The LSCSG is providing an opportunity for new organisations to join the Group. The process of informing the Department of Transport that you are interested in becoming a member of the LSCSG and providing information on your relevant experience is called ‘an Expression of Interest’.
The role of the Logistics and Supply Chain Skills Group Representative(s) is to actively contribute their experience and knowledge of the Logistics and Supply Chain sector and skills development in order to carry out the functions and deliver the objectives of the LSCSG. Representation on the Group will, as far as possible, be balanced across public and private bodies to ensure that both have a voice in the implementation of the Groups’ work programme. Applicants should have suitable and relevant experience in transport, logistics and supply chain, reflect gender balance, and be able to represent the full range of relevant interests of their organisation.
Representatives will be required to devote as much time to the duties of the LSCSG as is necessary for the proper and efficient discharge of their duties.
To be considered for the role of Logistics and Supply Chain Skills Group Representative to the LSCSG please see Expression of Interest application for membership of the Logistics and Supply Chain Skills Group (LSCSG), copy provided below in publications and complete the application form, no later than 5pm on Friday 6 September 2024.
Following a plenary meeting of the Logistics and Supply Chain Skills Group (LSCSG) on 8 May 2024, the work programme for 2024-2027 including twelve priority actions were agreed. The LSCSG Work Programme aligns closely with Ireland’s Road Haulage Strategy (RHS) 2022–2031, this 10-year strategy fulfils a Programme for Government commitment to produce the first-ever government strategy dedicated to the haulage and road freight sector. The strategy focuses on generating efficiencies, improving standards, securing jobs, and helping the road freight sector move to a low-carbon future. In the LSCSG Work Programme, action leads are designated for each action and these leads are expected to provide progress updates on their work at quarterly meetings of the full LSCSG between Q3 2024 and Q4 2027. For some actions, it may be appropriate to convene a subgroup of the LSCSG to work collaboratively on delivery; subgroups can be retired when an action is completed.
The LSCSG Work Programme 2024-2027 can be viewed and downloaded below.
In 2022, the Group completed work on a number of documents relating to careers in Logistics and Supply Chain. These include a ‘Careers in Logistics and Supply Chain’ brochure, which details the variety of job roles in the sector and an ‘Overview of Existing Education and Training Provision in Logistics and Supply Chain’ document, which outlines all education and training opportunities currently available in logistics and supply chain and which is periodically updated to include new courses.
In order to improve the profile of the Logistics/Supply Chain sector, and make it easier to recruit talent, the LSCSG also finalised two information notes:
• Information Note - How to qualify as a HGV driver in Ireland
• Information Note - Requirements for recruitment of HGV Drivers who are non-EEA citizens
All of these documents can be viewed and downloaded below.
One of the priorities for the Logistics and Supply Chain Skills Group in 2023 was to identify and promote research workstreams in logistics and supply chain in order to provide interested parties a list of research networks and institutes in Ireland that may be contacted in order to pursue research into logistics and supply chain topics and challenges.
