Peter Thorne is Professor in Physical Geography (Climate Change) at Maynooth University. He is Chair of the Global Climate Observing System's Atmospheric Observations Panel for Climate and chairs several Global Climate Observing System and World Meteorological Organization bodies and task teams.
For the Sixth Assessment Report cycle of the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change he was a Coordinating Lead Author on the WGI contribution and a Section Facilitator for the Synthesis Report.
He was an expert advisor the Ireland's Citizens Assembly in their considerations in how to make Ireland a leader in tackling climate change and an independent adviser to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action. Since 2021 he has been a member of Ireland's Climate Change Advisory Council and Chair its Adaptation Committee.
