The Inspectorate of the Department of Education has three main roles:

Supporting improvement in the education system

Inspectors provide advice to help early learning and care settings, schools and other education settings to help improve education provision for children and young people.

Building capacity in the education system

Inspectors help to build the capacity of school and setting leaders and teachers by providing relevant advice on how to improve. The Inspectorate also engages with other agencies and sections of the Department to support a cohesive approach to improvement.

Providing accountability

During inspection visits, inspectors evaluate education quality through various inspections, including unannounced visits, subject-focused evaluations and whole school/setting inspections. Inspection reports are made public on this website, offering insights into different aspects of education.
