Following an unsuccessful application for international protection an applicant is no longer entitled to remain in the State.
Therefore deportation and removal processes are an essential part of any immigration system. Those who do not have a legal right to remain in this country must return to their own country following fair procedure and having gone through all available avenues for appeal.
Many people leave the State voluntarily and are assisted by the Department of Justice and other organisations, such as the International Organization for Migration, the leading intergovernmental organization in the field of migration and part of the United Nations.
Where a person does not voluntarily return to their own country, the deportation order may be enforced. The Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB) has operational responsibility for enforcing deportation orders.
