Community Safety > What is Community Safety?
Community safety is about people being safe and feeling safe in their own community.
Ireland is generally regarded as a safe country, with relatively low crime rates and a general feeling of safety and security. However, this is not the case in every community and some people can experience a different reality.
We want to make every corner of Ireland a better, safer, more peaceful place for everyone.
Community Safety means Government Departments, State agencies, community organisations and the public working together with the common aim of making Ireland safer.
A huge variety of fantastic work has long been carried out by all of these groups, but we are stronger together.
The Department of Justice Community Safety Policy will ensure community safety is developed and protected through Local Community Safety Partnerships (LCSPs) and local community safety plans, supported through a national governance structure.
This structure will ensure that communities are empowered to have a strong say in what actions are prioritised by the services operating in their area, and will also have a key oversight role in ensuring those actions are followed through.
