IPAS is Ireland’s International Protection Accommodation Service. It is part of the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth.
When a person cannot return to their own country because they face persecution or have a well-founded fear for their safety, they are entitled to apply for international protection in another country. This is also known as seeking asylum.
While people are waiting for their decision on international protection the government is legally obliged by EU and International law to provide them with basic supports.
This includes somewhere to stay, education for children and the right to work after 6 months. People are also entitled to an allowance of €38.80 per week for an adult and €29.80 per week for a child.
IPAS provides accommodation at over 300 locations around the country, in every county. In September 2024, we are providing accommodation to over 32,000 people, including over 8,000 children.
