The Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht is extending the deadline for submissions on the National Policy on Architecture to 13 March to increase the range of organisations and people who hear about it and wish to get involved.
The consultation period has got off to a busy start. Workshops have been held in January by the department (on the five themes) and our partners the Irish Architecture Foundation (on ‘Designing quality places for public benefit’) and ICOMOS Ireland (on the five themes). Some of the schools of architecture are doing their own workshops and the All Ireland Architecture Research Group held an afternoon discussion on architectural policies at their annual conference in Limerick last week.
Coming up in February the Heritage Council will hold a workshop on the theme ‘Respecting our past, shaping our future’ and other events and activities are also being planned around the themes of the discussion document and in the regions and by other organisations which have an interest in developing and implementing a strong national architecture policy.

The quality of our built environment affects our everyday lives; it has a critical role in giving a distinctive sense of place to our cities, towns, villages and countryside. It is a responsibility of the Built Heritage and Architectural Policy Section to promote best practice in modern architecture and urban design.
New: National Policy on Architecture Public Consultation opens 18 December 2019 until 31 January 2020.
The department has published a discussion document, Places for People, as part of a public consultation process on a proposed new National Policy on Architecture.
The discussion document outlines the scope and ambitions of the proposed national policy. It is based on five key themes:
A new National Policy on Architecture is an exciting opportunity for people to contribute their ideas to create the conditions for a high quality, low carbon and more resilient built environment for future generations.

The policy will be informed by your views.
It will also be informed by other initiatives of the department such as Heritage Ireland 2030, the Climate Action Plan 2019, Culture 2025, the Creative Ireland Programme and the National Landscape Strategy for Ireland 2015-2025.
