Wool production is an important component of agri-industry. There are approximately 46,124 sheep flock-keepers registered on the Department’s database. The data from the 2019 census returns indicate that there were 3.8 million sheep in the State on 31 December 2019, representing an increase of 2% on the December 2018 figure of 3.73 million.
Wool is a sustainable, organic, renewable natural material which can be used in a wide range of products such as textiles, fertilisers, insulation and packaging.
One of the actions under the Programme for Government is:
An amount of €100,000 has been committed to this project which is intended as a basis for a policy roadmap for the Irish wool industry.
The proposed Terms of Reference to implement the review of the potential demand in domestic and international markets for wool based products such as insulation and fertilisers will include but are not limited to the following:
Stakeholders involved in the wool industry are now invited to submit
(a) Comments on the above proposed Terms of Reference and/or
(b) Submissions on the potential market opportunities for wool products on the domestic and international market.
Comments should be of a substantive nature and should be submitted to the Department of Agriculture, food and the Marine via e mail to woolfeasibilitystudy@agriculture.gov.ie and must be received in the Department by 17.30 on Friday, 2 April 2021.
Submissions on the potential market opportunities for wool products on the domestic and international market must be presented in the format outlined overleaf.
All comments and submissions will be given due consideration in the context of the review of potential markets for wool as set out in the programme for Government.
All correspondence in relation to the review of the potential demand in domestic and international markets for wool based products must be received in the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine by 17.30 on Friday, 2 April 2021 using e mail address below;
The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine is collecting this data as part of the review of potential markets for wool as set out in the Programme for Government. All submissions, including the name of the person or organisation making the submission, will be shared with external consultants who will be conducting a Wool Feasibility Study on our behalf.
The findings of this study will be published in a report which will be made available on the Department’s website. The name of the person or organisation making the submission will not be identified publicly in this report.
All submissions and comments submitted to the Department for this purpose are subject to release under the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act 2014 and the European Communities (Access to Information on the Environment) Regulations 2007- 2014. Submissions are also subject to Data Protection legislation. Personal, confidential or commercially sensitive information should not be included in your submission and it will be presumed that all information contained in your submission is releasable under the Freedom of Information Act 2014.
