The Environment Fund, established under the Waste Management Act, 1996, as amended, is a positive example of the use of economic instruments to improve environmental outcomes, with revenues from environmental levies reinvested in actions which seek to provide support for environmental objectives such as community initiatives to improve the local environment, research, education, communication and waste recovery.
Following on from a review of the Environment Fund, the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment is seeking views in relation to the proposed introduction of a range of environmental levies. Proposals include a coffee cup levy, a waste recovery levy and increases to the existing plastic bag and landfill levies.
This consultation will help inform the development of the a new range of environmental levies on a phased basis over the period 2020-2025, aimed at encouraging positive environmental behavioural change and climate action.
