The Criminal Law Codification Advisory Committee was established on 1 February 2007 under Part 14 of the Criminal Justice Act 2006.
The function of the Advisory Committee is to oversee the development of a programme for the codification of the criminal law.
Significant areas of the criminal law have been codified in a number of statutes in recent years, such as the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997 and the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act 2001.
However, the law dealing with criminal offences remains vast and complex, contained in hundreds of years of statutes and court judgments, which are not always easily accessible.
The purpose of the codification project is to make the criminal law available in one easily accessible instrument.
Following enactment of a criminal code, the Advisory Committee will oversee the further maintenance of the code so as to preserve its internal logic and structure.
