European Research Area Networks (or ERANETs) are research initiatives that contribute to the building of the European Research Area and under Horizon 2020 they are designed to support transnational public-public partnerships in their preparation, design, implementation, coordination and networking of joint research activities. Transnational research and innovation Calls launched under these ERANETs are funded by participating member state research funding bodies and, sometimes, include top-up EU funding in selected areas with high European added-value.
ERANET competitive research calls are open to Irish scientists and researchers from eligible Research Performing Organisations (RPOs) to develop collaborative research proposals with research partners from at least three other Member States or Associated Countries. ERANETs also provide opportunities for researchers to participate in scientific exchange between collaborating research institutions to enhance their technical and professional training and development. Where funders from Third Countries or International Networks are involved in an ERANET it is also possible to partner with institutions from these countries/networks in addition to the three minimum entities. Once submitted, research proposal applications are peer reviewed through a rigorous evaluation process, with the research partners of successful projects being funded by their national funding organisation.

ERANETs Supported by DAFM
DAFM provides support and funding to ERANET research activities in the agri-food-forest-bioeconomy area that are undertaken in conjunction with other EU Member States, the EU Commission and sometimes can include third-party countries or organisations, such as New Zealand or the Global Research Alliance. The research activities include specific ERANET research calls as well as joint calls between ERANETs and research knowledge hubs. Some ERANET research calls supported by DAFM also link into Joint Programme Initiatives (JPIs) that are also directly supported by DAFM, such as JPI AMR, FACCE JPI, JPI HDHL or indirectly involve DAFM through collaboration with other national funders (i.e. Water JPI).
