These are the details of the National Pig Census. The National herd consisted of 1,675 active herds containing 1,702,921 pigs, which comprised 149,689 breeding pigs, 1,552,436 fattening pigs and 796 non-production pigs.
Pig herd keepers must count the number of animals present on their holdings each year, and record the details on a census form. They are legally obliged to return their census forms each year to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.
