Ministers announce Ireland as Chair of the Global Research Alliance for Agricultural Greenhouse Gases
Ireland, through the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, has officially assumed the Chair of the Global Research Alliance for Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA), for a period of eighteen months from 01 January 2025. This is the first time that Ireland has chaired the GRA since joining in 2009.
Professor Tommy Boland, UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science, is a Co-Chair of the Livestock Research Group (one of four research groups) of the GRA
The Agriculture and Climate Change Conference will take place in Dublin Castle on Thursday 05 June 2025. Key themes will include genetics and breeding, feed additives, other methane and nitrous oxide reducing technologies, carbon sequestration and storage, policy and market trends, and international perspectives in these areas

‘Agriculture and Climate Change: Science in Action’ Conference Aviva Stadium, 15th November 2023
On Wednesday 15th November 2023, 500 delegates from across Ireland’s agri-food sector, research and higher education organisations, government departments and agencies and civil society gathered at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, to participate in the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine’s ‘Agriculture and Climate Change: Science into Action’ Conference to take stock of the relationship between agriculture and climate change and to hear updates on the latest climate research and policy developments.
The conference was opened by the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Charlie McConalogue T.D., who also introduced a special address by An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar.
Scientific updates were provided by a range of national and international speakers and their presentations can be accessed below:

Research & Innovation for Sustainable Food Systems: Delivering on the Ambition of Food Vision 2030 event Friday 3rd June 2022
On Friday 3rd June 2022, over 120 delegates from across Ireland’s agri-food sector, higher education and civil society gathered at the Teagasc Ashtown Food Research Centre in Dublin, to participate in the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) and Teagasc co-organised seminar and workshop on Research & Innovation for Sustainable Food Systems: Delivering on the Ambition of Food Vision 2030.
‘Everyone at the table - Co-creating knowledge for food systems transformation’ report) On the day participants explored the central role research and innovation for sustainable food systems will play in delivering on the ambition of the Food Vision 2030 strategy. Martin Heydon, Minister of State with special responsibility for Research and Development, Farm Safety and New Market Development at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine delivered the opening address, followed by presentations from distinguished speakers:
• Professor Joachim Von Braun, Chair of the Scientific Group for the UN Food Systems Summit and President of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.
• Tom Arnold, Chair of the High-Level EU Committee in Food Systems Science, who have recently published the ‘Everyone at the table - Co-creating knowledge for food systems transformation’ report)
• Professor Ismahane Elouafi, Chief Scientist with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the UN.

Ploughing Championships Research Showcase
Government supported research for climate mitigation in agriculture
Agriculture is a major contributor to Irelands greenhouse gas emissions due to the predominance of livestock within the sector. While the challenge to reduce this is significant, research, including that funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, has been making great strides in developing insights, technologies and solutions to mitigate these emissions.
A snapshot of this research was showcased at the 2022 Ploughing Championships where scientists from Teagasc and University College Dublin where able to share innovative new solutions in animal, pasture and soil management that could deliver significant impacts in the near future.
