Principal Officer, Information Management Unit

The Department's Information Management Unit (IMU) supports best practice, enhances staff knowledge and embeds consistency of approach to Records Management and Data Protection across the Department.

This unit leads and supports records management activities including physical records and eDocs usage, and also engages with the National Archives.

The unit includes the Data Protection function which carries specific statutory tasks assigned to the Data Protection Officer (or DPO). It also provides risk advice to business units, supports the Department's compliance activities, embeds data protection knowledge through staff training, leads the Data Protection Liaison Officers Network and engages with the Data Protection Commission.

The Department became the data controller of the personal data in the Mother and Baby Commission of Investigation Archive following the dissolution of the Commission of investigation in 2021. IMU's functions include responsibility for the management and storage of the archive and providing access through Subject Access and FOI requests.
