Why become a Social Worker?

Many people go into social work because they want to make a difference, to work with people and empower them within their lives. Social work can be rewarding as well as being emotionally demanding. Whilst supporting people who are experiencing challenges can be difficult and while the role can be complex, as a Social Worker you will be working to help people face their challenges and improve their lives.

The work of Social Workers is one of the most important and impactful careers that someone can choose. The role of the Social Worker is broad and varied and there are opportunities to work with all types of people in society and help them improve their lives in really difficult times. While the work may be hard, there are many rewards when the interventions being put in place can make real changes for people.

Social workers have the opportunity to progress in continuous professional development as a Social Worker, which is embedded in social work practice in all settings. They also have the opportunity to work in many different settings including:

• Mental Health

• Disability

• Child Protection

• Probation services

• Health services etc.


Career progression

Social work is a challenging but rewarding career. It requires a unique set of skills, compassion, and dedication.

There are many ways for you to progress in your career, for example by becoming a Senior Social Worker Practitioner, or specialising in a specific area like mental health, child protection, or research and training.
