Special Needs Assistant Workforce Development Unit

Special Needs Assistant Workforce Development Unit (SNAWDU) is a unit within Special Education responsible for the development of policy in relation to SNAs.

What we do

The SNAWDU was established in December 2022, to enable a more holistic and strategic approach to Special Needs Assistant (SNA) policy development and delivery of an enhanced SNA service.

The Department plans to develop a “vision” for the future of the SNA workforce, informed by the SNAs themselves, teachers, the wider sector and evidence of what type of service delivers the best outcome for children with Special Educational Needs.

The establishment of the dedicated Special Needs Assistants Workforce Development Unit is the first step in this process. These policy matters include:

  • Learning and Development programme for SNAs
  • Review of SNA employment contract
  • Role and duties of the SNA
  • SNA minimum entry requirements
  • Co-operation with the School Inclusion Model (SIM)
  • Quality Assurance for the SNA service
