Statement from the Department of Education - 22 March 2024

The Department of Education and the Minister for Education Norma Foley extend their best wishes to the Minister of State for Special Education and Inclusion Josepha Madigan as she announces her resignation today.

Minister Madigan was the first Minister of State with a brief in special education and her drive and commitment to this work will leave a very strong legacy in our school communities and, in particular, in special education provision in Ireland. Increased investment in the area of special education in her time in office will benefit students with special educational needs now and in the future.

Minister Foley said:

“I am very sorry to see that Minister Josepha Madigan has resigned her position as Minister of State in the Department of Education with particular responsibility for the area of special education. Josepha has been hard-working, diligent and hugely committed to her portfolio. She served her constituency of Dublin Rathdown well, and she had a distinguished record in cabinet as Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht in the previous government. She was an excellent colleague, and I sincerely wish her well in her remaining term as a TD and with all her plans for the future.”
