Post-Primary Upskilling Programmes

Minister for Education, Norma Foley TD and the Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris TD announce additional places in 2022 on programmes to upskill registered post-primary teachers to teach mathematics, physics and Spanish and the intention to issue a call for a new upskilling programme in Irish.

Further additional places have also been made available for the third intake to the programmes, commencing in 2023.

Details on the new upskilling programme in Irish will be available here. Further announcements will be made in due course.


The following three level 8 programmes commenced in January 2021. A third intake with additional places, commencing in 2023.

Professional Diploma in Mathematics for Teaching

Delivered by University of Limerick in collaboration with University of Galway, Dublin City University, Technological University Dublin, Cork Institute of Technology, Letterkenny Institute of Technology and Waterford Institute of Technology. Click here for more information.

Programme Highlights

  • Commenced January 2021
  • 2 years part-time, delivered in a flexible and innovative environment
  • Teaching Council additional subject registration
  • Level 8 qualification: teach at the highest level
  • Mathematics and physics programmes offered through the medium of Irish
  • Enhanced career prospects
  • No fee cost to participating teachers

These new programmes are designed to upskill already registered post-primary teachers to meet the Teaching Council’s curricular subject requirements in an additional subject.

The programmes will be delivered on a part-time, flexible basis allowing greater participation and flexibility.

Applications should be made directly to the appropriate higher education institute (HEI).
