Asbestos Remediation Programme

Asbestos is a hazardous material that can have serious long-term detrimental effects on the health of people who are exposed to it. It is classified as a Class 1 carcinogen.

School authorities must ensure that only approved asbestos removal contractors are used for the removal and disposal of asbestos material if required during any school building or refurbishment project. A list of asbestos contractors and technical advisers, and further guidelines are listed below.

The removal and disposal of asbestos materials are subject to strict procedures and the following regulations:

• Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations, 2006 S.I. no. 504 of 2006
• Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Exposure to Asbestos) (Amendment) Regulation 2010 S.I. no. 589/2010

The department provides grant aid to school management authorities to assist them with the removal of asbestos materials where necessary.

Schools must apply directly to the Department of Education using the Emergency Works Application Form.
