What the Asbestos Remediation Programme is
Asbestos is a hazardous material that can have serious long-term detrimental effects on the health of people who are exposed to it. It is classified as a Class 1 carcinogen.
School authorities must ensure that only approved asbestos removal contractors are used for the removal and disposal of asbestos material if required during any school building or refurbishment project. A list of asbestos contractors and technical advisers, and further guidelines are listed below.
The removal and disposal of asbestos materials are subject to strict procedures and the following regulations:
- Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations, 2006 S.I. no. 504 of 2006
- Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Exposure to Asbestos) (Amendment) Regulation 2010 S.I. no. 589/2010
The department provides grant aid to school management authorities to assist them with the removal of asbestos materials where necessary.
