Carer's Leave Scheme for Teachers and Special Needs Assistants (SNAs)



Carer’s Leave Scheme

Carer’s Leave is a statutory leave of absence for up to a maximum of 104 weeks to allow a teacher/SNA a period of unpaid leave so they can provide full-time care and attention to a relevant person. A relevant person is a person deemed to be in need of this level of care by the Department of Social Protection.

Teachers

SNAs

How to apply for Carer’s Leave

Teachers

A teacher must make an application on the DSP CARB1 Form. On approval, they must then complete the Application Form (PDF, from page 99) on page 99 of Circular 0054/2019 and return it to their employer at least 6 weeks before the planned commencement date.

SNAs

An SNA must make an application on the DSP CARB1 Form. On approval, they must then complete the Application form (PDF, from page 10) at Appendix A of Circular 0033/2023 and return it to their employer at least 6 weeks before the planned commencement date.

Special Needs Assistants (SNAs) are encouraged to submit queries regarding SNA Leave Schemes to their employers in the first instance. All employers have access to applicable Circulars relating to SNA Leave Schemes. Queries relating to statutory and non-statutory SNAs Leave Schemes can be submitted to Leave Admin Section, Teacher/SNA Terms and Conditions Section at the email address above. Recruitment and Appointment Unit in Teacher/SNA Terms and Conditions Section sets out the recruitment and appointment procedures for SNAs for the primary and post primary sector. Queries should be submitted to PORqueries@education.gov.ie
