What Home Tuition is
The Department of Education operates 4 categories of home tuition:
• special educational needs and medical grounds
• children with no school place
• children in care
• maternity-related absences
Home tuition for children with special educational needs and medical grounds
This scheme is for:
- children who are unable to attend school for reasons such as chronic illness
- children with special educational needs who are seeking an educational placement
- early educational intervention for children with autism

Home tuition for children with No School Place(NSP)
Is a temporary educational measure for a child who is:
- temporarily without a school place, or
- without the offer of a school place and
- who is a actively seeking a place in a school recognised by the department

Application forms for Home Tuition No School Place are available from the local Educational Welfare Officer. You will find contact details for the Educational Welfare Officer on the TUSLA website.
Home tuition for Children in Care(CIC)
- This scheme is for children in care, who are without a school place due to emergency placement or placement disruption.

Application forms for Home Tuition Children in Care (CIC) are available from the appointed social worker.
Home tuition for students on maternity-related absences
This scheme is to provide home tuition to students in a recognised school at post-primary level at junior or senior cycle, whose education may be disrupted due to pregnancy.

Home Tuition Payments
Part-time hourly home tuition grant rates have been revised with effect from 1 March 2025 under the new Public Service Agreement 2024-2026
In this instance, the agreement provides for:
• 2% increase from 1 March 2025
Further information regarding the new pay increase granted in 2025 under the agreement is available in Department of Education Circular 0015/2025- Revision of Teacher Salaries under Public Service Agreement 2024-2026; Application of pay adjustments due on 1 March 2025.
Current Rates
The rates for home tuition payments are as follows::

Primary Qualified Rate | €48.72 per hour | €49.69 per hour |
Post Primary Qualified Rate | €53.55 per hour | €54.62 per hour |
Modified Rate | €41.27 per hour | €42.37 per hour |
