Job Sharing Scheme for teachers and special needs assistants (SNAs)



Job Sharing Scheme

The purpose of the Job Sharing Scheme is to assist teachers and SNAs to combine work commitments and personal responsibilities/ choices.

Teachers

A teacher may make an application to share a full-time post on a 50:50 basis with an existing wholetime teacher or may apply to reduce their hours to 50% of a wholetime teacher. The minimum period for a Job Sharing arrangement is one school year.

Important Note for Teachers- 2024/25 school year

In response to issues raised in relation to teacher supply, the restriction of engaging in substitute teaching imposed in the Job Sharing Scheme as contained in Chapter 8 (Paragraph 11.1(a)) (PDF, from page 112) of Circular 54/2019 is suspended for the 2024/25 school year. Based on these current temporary arrangements, a Job Sharing teacher may be employed to work in a substitute capacity, during the period they are rostered off duty. Please refer to Information Note : TC/IN 0008/2024

SNAs

An SNA may make an application to share their current wholetime post on a 50:50 basis i.e. to work half the weekly hours they are currently contracted to work.

The minimum period for a Job Sharing arrangement is one school year.

How to apply for Job Sharing

Teachers

A teacher must complete, on an annual basis, the Application Form at Appendix A (PDF, from page 117)and submit to their employer not later than 1st February before the school year in which they propose to commence job sharing. Similarly, a teacher wishing to extend an existing job sharing arrangement must submit this Application Form by 1st February.

SNAs

An SNA who wishes to apply for a job sharing position must submit to their employer on an annual basis, the completed Application Form in Circular 0041/2014 not later than 1st March before the school year in which they plan to commence job sharing. Similarly, an SNA wishing to extend an existing job sharing arrangement must submit this Application Form by 1st March.
