What the Special Needs Assistant (SNA) Redundancy Scheme is
The Labour Relations Commission agreed that redundancy compensation can be applied to SNAs who are:
- employed in primary schools or
- employed in second level schools and
- in approved posts with more than one year’s continuous service
If the approved allocation to the school is reduced and it is necessary to cease or reduce the employment of an SNA, the SNA’s job may be reduced to part-time or terminated through a redundancy.
Unless the most junior SNA in the school has a written child-specific contract that entitles them to remain in the school, the selection criteria for redundancy is on a last in first out basis.
Full details of the SNA Redundancy Scheme are contained in Circular 0058/2006 Redundancy Arrangements for Special Need Assistants in Primary and Second Level Schools
