John McHale is Established Professor and Head of Economics at the J.E. Cairnes School of Business and Economics, University of Galway. He was previously Executive Dean of the College of Business, Public Policy and Law and Director of the Whitaker Institute for Innovation and Societal Change. Prior to joining the University of Galway, he held positions as Assistant Professor of Economics and Associate Professor of Economics at Harvard University, and as Associate Professor of Managerial Economics Queen’s University, Ontario. He holds Ph.D and A.M degrees from Harvard University, and first-class B.Comm. and M.Econ.Sc. degrees from the National University of Ireland. Professor McHale was Chair of the Irish Fiscal Advisory Council from 2011 to 2016 and he has been an independent member of the National Economic and Social Council (NESC) and the Pensions Board. He served as President of the Irish Economic Association from 2016 to 2018.
