The Chief Economist has responsibility for Economic Policy Division including:
- macroeconomic analysis and forecasting
- developing a strategy for the Irish economy across all sectors
- the economic analysis of Department policies
- responsibility at Assistant Secretary level for overall budgetary policy
In relation to budgetary policy, the Chief Economist has responsibility to:
- coordinate the budgetary process in accordance with the EU Semester
- monitor Exchequer returns
- forecast tax receipts
- analyse the impact of policy options on government finances
