Brídín O’Donoghue

Assigned the role of Deputy Legal Adviser and assigned responsibility for the direction and management of a Unit in the Legal Division that:

• Provides legal advice and assistance to a number of Divisions and Units of the Department in respect of international humanitarian law, human rights law, outer space, disarmament and non-proliferation, passport service, the Council of Europe and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe;

• Acts as agent of the Government in proceedings before the European Court of Human Rights, and provides a similar service in relation to complaints brought before the European Committee on Social Rights and UN Treaty Monitoring Bodies;

• Carries out functions with respect to Ireland’s membership of the Hague Conference on Private International Law and UNIDROIT;

• Chairs the National Committee on International Humanitarian Law;

• Represents Ireland at meetings in the UN, the Council of Europe, the EU and other international organisations and legal fora.
