Statement by the Tánaiste on the situation in Syria

"I utterly condemn the attacks, violence and killing of civilians in western Syria. The people of Syria have suffered appallingly for far too long. The latest violence and accounts of brutality are truly shocking.

"The interim authorities must ensure the protection of civilians irrespective of faith or ethnicity, and hold accountable those responsible.

"The creation of an independent committee to investigate is a welcome development. There must be no impunity.

"Ireland calls for a peaceful and inclusive, Syrian-led transition that guarantees the full protection of human rights for all Syrians."
