Tánaiste invites students across the island of Ireland to apply to participate in the 2025 Global Ireland Young Leaders Programme

Tánaiste Simon Harris has today announced the call for applications for the 2025 iteration of the Global Ireland Young Leaders Programme, an initiative designed to inspire independent and creative thinking among second-level students about Ireland’s role in the world.

Now in its second year, the programme invites Transition Year students in Ireland and Year 11/Year 12 students in Northern Ireland to apply for a unique opportunity to gain first-hand insights into Ireland’s foreign policy and diplomacy through a three-day immersive programme in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade offices in Dublin.

Building on the success of last year’s inaugural programme, which saw a vibrant response from a wide variety of schools, the 2025 Global Ireland Young Leaders will welcome students across Ireland to explore the dynamic work of Ireland’s foreign affairs service. The programme features interactions with senior officials, diplomats, civil society partners, and embassy teams, providing participants with valuable perspectives on Ireland’s global engagement.

Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Simon Harris said:

“I'm delighted to see the Global Ireland Young Leaders Programme returning for its 2nd year. This programme is a testament to our commitment to inspiring young people across the island of Ireland to engage with global issues.

“It offers students a unique opportunity to gain valuable insights into diplomacy and international cooperation while encouraging creative thinking about Ireland’s role on the world stage. I eagerly anticipate seeing this year's participants bring fresh perspectives and ambition to Ireland's global engagement."

For the 2025 edition, successful applicants will experience a multifaceted program including interactive workshops, discussions on the work of international NGOs, peace and reconciliation on the island of Ireland, and an opportunity to visit an embassy in Dublin. The programme aims to encourage the next generation to envision their future role in international cooperation and foreign policy. By inviting young people into this conversation, the programme underscores the value of youth engagement in shaping a future marked by international collaboration and understanding.
