Tánaiste to hold high-level meetings at UNHLW

The Tánaiste, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Defence, Micheál Martin TD will hold a series of bilateral engagements with counterparts from across the globe on the first day of UN High Level Week on Monday (September 23rd).

The Tánaiste will meet the UN High Commissioner for Refugees as well as the Foreign Ministers of Indonesia, Sierra Leone to discuss the impact of climate change, ongoing conflicts in the world as well as the dire humanitarian situation in Sudan. He will also attend an informal meeting of the EU Foreign Ministers Council focusing on Ukraine and Middle East.

On Monday, the Tánaiste will address the Summit of the Future Interactive Dialogue: Towards a Common Digital Future – strengthening inclusive innovation and cooperation to bridge the digital divides. The Tánaiste will reiterate Ireland’s commitment to multilateral engagement in the digital sphere to increase access to the digital space globally while ensuring that human rights remain at the centre of digital space in the future.

On Monday afternoon, Tánaiste will address an event, co-hosted by the Permanent Missions to the United Nations of Ireland, Switzerland, Indonesia and Qatar, on ‘Ways to Include Women In the Future of Afghanistan’. The event will include the screening of a documentary on the lives of Afghan women participating In Doha Peace Talks with the Taliban, introduced by Meryl Streep.

The Tánaiste will also attend a dinner event focusing on Sustainable Development Goal 4: Educating for the Next Generation, continuing the youth focused theme of the Summit of the Future declaration.

The Tánaiste said:

“Ireland has committed to using every available opportunity to highlight the catastrophic humanitarian situations in Gaza and Sudan and I look forward to meeting with other foreign ministers as we discuss the path to sustainable peace.

“I am also looking forward to engaging on the role of women in Afghanistan. Women and girls are especially suffering under the Taliban’s control. The deprivation of women and girls’ human rights may amount to crimes against humanity, including gender persecution.”
