Build Back Home

To deliver the government’s construction targets under Housing for All, it is estimated that almost 69,000 new entrants will need to be recruited in managerial, professional, skilled, and semi-skilled occupations by the end of the decade.

These new entrants may be a combination of workers currently employed in the industry who are seeking to upskill, jobseekers who wish to pursue a career in building or retrofitting, or skilled Irish construction workers who have moved abroad and are considering returning.

Research carried out by the Department, however, revealed that many Irish construction workers living abroad have misconceptions about returning home.

Some believe life admin such as banking, getting a mobile phone and taking out health insurance involves a lot of red tape.

Many suspect their overseas experience won’t be valued when they return to take up work in Ireland.

And others are concerned about the pipeline of work available in Ireland over the coming years and would like to know more about the type of projects they might work on.

This page aims to address those concerns by explaining how the red tape involved in moving back home is not as arduous as one might suspect.

It will also show the Government is committed to delivering exciting and innovative construction projects right across the country for years to come.

And it aims to reassure that both Government and industry value the experience gained by those who have worked on exciting, modern, large-scale projects abroad.

You've built across the world. Now come and build back home.
