Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Simon Harris TD has today (January 16) paid tribute to Professor Mark Ferguson for his service as Director General of Science Foundation Ireland.
Professor Ferguson will leave his post today after 10 years at the helm of the organisation. Prof. Ferguson also served as Chief Scientific Advisor to the Government.
Minister Harris said:
“During the past 10 years Professor Ferguson has influenced and shaped Irish and international scientific research and innovation. Over the last two years in particular, the public have been given an insight into Mark’s vision and leadership through his work throughout the pandemic. Our science and research system has benefitted greatly from Mark’s passion and enthusiasm and we remain grateful to him. On a personal level, Mark has been a great friend to this Department and we hope he will continue to be.”
Professor Ferguson will be replaced by Professor Philip Nolan as Director General of Science Foundation Ireland.
Minister Harris added:
“I am delighted to welcome Professor Philip Nolan to the role. Everyone in Ireland knows Philip as a member of the National Public Health Emergency Team, and he’s been a constant and valued source of expertise in that role, for which we owe him a lot. Everyone in Maynooth knows Prof Nolan, the President of Maynooth University for the last ten years. Now, he’s going to lead SFI in contributing to a strong sustainable economy and society, through supporting the development of a world class research and innovation system, and I and my Department are very much looking forward to working with him.”
