Dr Caroline Joyce is a Principal Clinical Biochemist with HSE Southwest, serving Cork University Hospital and Cork University Maternity Hospital. With over 30 years of experience in laboratory medicine, she specialises in clinical biochemistry and human genetics. She holds a PhD in Biochemistry from University College Cork and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath, UK).
Dr Joyce is a registered Clinical Scientist with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) in the UK and is recognised as a European Specialist in Laboratory Medicine (EuSpLM) by the European Federation of Laboratory Medicine. She is also certified as a European Clinical Laboratory Geneticist (ErCLG) by the European Board of Medical Genetics.
Dr Joyce has made significant contributions to national healthcare policy, serving on the National Genetics and Genomics Office testing guidance working group, which informed the HSE’s National Genomic Test Directory. Since 2021, she has been a member of the Expert Advisory Group for the National Maternity & Gynaecology Clinical Guideline Programme. Dr Joyce also co-authored the HSE National Clinical Guideline for the Diagnosis, Staging and Treatment of Gestational Trophoblastic Disease and serves on the National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) Gestational Trophoblastic Disease Steering Committee.
In addition to her clinical and advisory roles, Dr Joyce maintains an extensive research portfolio and is a member of the Pregnancy Loss Research Group at INFANT, University College Cork. Her research focuses on gestational trophoblastic disease and rare diseases, contributing to advancements in diagnosis and patient care.
