Biography

Ms Mary Brosnan

Ms Mary Brosnan is a nurse and a midwife with 40 years of experience in healthcare. She has an MSc in Organisational Behaviour from TCD. She is also a Florence Nightingale Foundation Scholar, the first Irish midwife to obtain this award and she is an Adjunct Associate Professor of the School of Nursing and Midwifery in UCD.

Ms Brosnan has been the Director of Midwifery and Nursing at the National Maternity Hospital for almost 20 years. During that time, she has been responsible for leading a team of more than 500 midwives, nurses and health care assistants. She has supported the implementation of many important maternity and gynaecology service developments, such as the expansion of the community and home birth scheme, women’s health initiatives, development of advanced midwife and nurse practitioner roles and the introduction of midwife prescribing.

Ms Brosnan has previously worked as midwifery advisor in the Department of Health in the Nursing Policy Unit. She has represented midwifery nationally on the NMBI midwives committee and was part of the steering group that developed the first National Maternity Strategy 2016-2026.

Ms Brosnan is very interested in research and has co-chaired the Joint Research Committee with UCD midwifery and nursing colleagues, focusing on researching many important areas impacting clinical care, including maternal birth satisfaction studies, bereavement care, labour and postnatal care.
