Appointment to the Social Workers Registration Board

On the nomination of the Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, the Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly T.D., has re-appointed the following person as a member of the Social Workers Registration Board from the 23 February 2021 to 4 August 2024:
Dr Perry Share
Dr Share is the Head of Student Success at the Institute of Technology Sligo. In that position he is responsible for coordination and integration of services and initiatives at the Institute that provide a supportive and facilitative learning, teaching and social environment.
Dr Share has over forty years’ experience in the higher education sector in Ireland and Australia, with over 25 at senior management level. From 2017-2020 he was the Project Manager for the Connacht Ulster Alliance, an alliance of the Institutes of Technology in Galway-Mayo, Letterkenny and Sligo that have indicated a desire to develop a Technological University for the West/North West. Prior to that he was Head of School of Business and Social Sciences (2014-2017) and Head of Department of Social Sciences (1997-2014) at the Institute of Technology Sligo. After graduation with a 1st class honours degree in Sociology from Trinity College Dublin, he spent 13 years (1984-1997) as a doctoral researcher and lecturer at universities in Australia.
He has responsible at the Institute of Technology Sligo for the development and management of programmes of study from NFQ levels 4-9 in a number of areas, including social care practice, early childhood care and education, employability, advocacy studies, custodial care and leadership in early years. These programmes were initiated and developed in partnership with a number of external organisations, including the Irish Prison Service, Epilepsy Ireland, the Health Service Executive (HSE), Equality Authority, County Childcare Committees and the Citizens’ Information Board. He has also supervised eight doctoral students to completion.
Dr Share is also a social researcher, writer and editor in the social sciences. His research interests lie in the areas of social robotics and care technologies; teaching and learning in higher education; professionalisation and the social professions; and the sociology of food and eating. He has published in peer-reviewed books and journals and is the co-author of one major Irish textbook (A Sociology of Ireland, 4 editions) and co-editor of another (Applied Social Care, 3 editions) as well as a number of other books.
Dr Share has been a chair and member of numerous accreditation panels for Higher Education Training and Awards Council (HETAC)/ Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) and individual institutions and was Chair of the Academic Processes Committee of the Institute of Technology Sligo. Outside of academia he has recently completed a period as Chair of the Leitrim Sculpture Centre, an Arts Council funded multidisciplinary arts organisation based in Manorhamilton, Co. Leitrim and was formerly a Council member of the Yeats Society, Sligo.
Dr Share's expertise lies in the field of higher education, teaching and learning, development of the social professions and innovative approaches to teaching and learning. He is a winner of the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Teaching at Charles Sturt University, New South Wales, and the Custodial Care team he headed was the winner of a NAIRTL teaching award.
