Appointments to the Health and Social Care Professionals Council (CORU)

Following a Public Appointments Service (PAS) campaign the Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly TD, has appointed the following as a member of the Health and Social Care Professionals Council (CORU) effect from 14 June 2021 to 5 May 2025:

Mr Alan Hughes

Mr Hughes currently runs his own consultancy business, LIT Healthcare, where he offers expertise in complex healthcare environments to improve patient outcomes. Prior to setting up his own business Mr Hughes worked for fourteen years as a healthcare management consultant and policy strategist at KPMG.

Mr Hughes has worked on acute and community care reform, digital care, payment reform, health workforce solutions and healthcare policy. He has managed project teams on healthcare projects across the HSE, NHS England, Northern Ireland's HSC and in the Middle East. He has also worked on multiple projects aligning hospitals and community care to reduce elective waiting lists and improve patient outcomes.

He has considerable financial expertise having worked as a financial analyst in London for many years with Dresdner Kleinwort/Lehman Brothers. His role in these organisations included reviewing and profiling life science, medical device and healthcare businesses. He also conducted valuations and strategic and competitive analyses of healthcare players on global merger and acquisition projects.

Mr Hughes has an MBA from London Business School and BA International (Econ) with German from University College Dublin.

Mr Hughes has significant board experience having served from 2013 to 2017 on the National Children’s Hospital Foundation Board and is currently a lay member of the National Immunisation Advisory Committee.
