Minister for Health launches National Cancer Registry Strategic Plan 2024-2026

Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly has today launched the Strategic Plan 2024-2026 of the National Cancer Registry Ireland.

The National Cancer Registry (NCRI) Strategic Plan will help to implement recommendation 52 of the National Cancer Strategy 2017-2026 to use robust data to drive improvements for cancer patients.

Since nationwide cancer registration began in 1994, the NCRI has established itself as a rigorous source of data on cancer incidence. The annual reports and thematic reports published by the NCRI allow for the dissemination of its monitoring of trends and outcomes in different cancer types.

Launching the Strategic Plan today, Minister Donnelly said:

"For 30 years, the National Cancer Registry Ireland has been helping us to better understand cancer. Since it began nationwide cancer registration in 1994, the Registry has published annual reports on cancer incidence and epidemiology in Ireland.

"These reports are an invaluable tool for policy makers, as we can see what effect our actions have on cancer incidence and outcomes. The insights that the Registry can give us into how diagnoses and stage of presentation can impact the patient experience are critical to how we plan cancer services. Since 2020, we have recognised the importance of the Registry’s functions by increasing the annual budget by 30% to €4.6 million in 2024."

The NCRI Strategic Plan 2024-2026 sets out five key objectives, setting out actions through which the objectives, and thus, the strategic plan will be delivered. The Plan builds on existing structures in the NCRI and focuses on increasing and optimising the uses of available data to drive improvements in cancer care for patients.
