Do you own a vacant property or want to buy one? Did you know that there are a number of government schemes to help you turn a vacant or derelict building into a home? Breathe new life into an old home. Whether you are looking to buy a vacant property to convert it into your home, or refurbish a vacant residential or commercial property for residential use, a range of government supports exist.

Addressing vacancy and ensuring that existing housing stock is utilised to the fullest extent possible is a key aim of Housing for All, the government’s housing plan to 2030.

Policy on addressing vacancy

Housing for All’ is the government’s housing plan to 2030. The plan sets out four pathways to a sustainable housing system. Pathway four, ‘Pathway to Addressing Vacancy and Efficient use of Housing Stock’ seeks to ensure through a range of incentives and other measures that existing housing stock is utilised to the fullest extent possible. This will, in turn, help revitalise our cities, towns and villages

Vacant Homes Officers

A Vacant Homes Officer is available in each local authority to provide information, advice and support for owners of vacant homes and those considering buying a home that is currently vacant. They are available to deal with queries from members of the public and key interested parties on vacant homes/properties and to provide expert up-to-date advice on bringing vacant property back into use.
