Background

Climate change has consequences for Ireland’s built and archaeological heritage which underscore the need for effective climate adaptation measures to build resilience to the impacts of climate change.

In accordance with the National Adaptation Framework, the National Monuments Service and National Built Heritage Service are preparing a Built and Archaeological Heritage Sectoral Adaptation Plan.

The Adaptation Plan below sets out the policy and context for heritage adaptation policy in Ireland and a series of actions and objectives. Following consideration of submissions made in this public consultation, a new Sectoral Adaptation Plan will be submitted to Government seeking approval, and will replace the existing Plan that has been in place since 2019.

If you have any submissions, observations or comments on the draft Sectoral Adaptation Plan, these can be sent to climatechange@housing.gov.ie

Interested parties are invited to make written submissions or comments no later than 5pm 29 July 2025.

All submissions and comments submitted to the Department for this purpose are subject to release under the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act 2014 and the European Communities (Access to Information on the Environment) Regulations 2007-2014. Submissions are also subject to Data Protection legislation.

Personal, confidential or commercially sensitive information should not be included in your submission and it will be presumed that all information contained in your submission is releasable under the Freedom of Information Act 2014.

What we will do with your response

Your feedback will be recorded, collated, analysed, and evaluated to determine appropriate changes to the draft Climate Change Sectoral Adaptation Plan. Please note that the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage may publish a summary of the survey results and may also publish anonymised data from the responses received.

Please note that submissions received may be made available without personal information on the Department’s website and may be shared, unless otherwise requested. In any event, all submissions received will be subject to the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act and Data Protection legislation.
