Summary
The Department of Housing Planning and Local Government has published the draft update of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive Article 8 Assessment, Article 9 Determination of Good Environmental Status and Article 10 Environmental Targets for public consultation.
Why we are launching this consultation?
The Marine Strategy Framework Directive is implemented in 6-year cycles commencing in 2012. The Initial Assessment addressing Articles 8, 9 and 10 of the directive was published and reported to the European Commission in 2013. This was followed by the development of a monitoring programme in 2015 and a programme of measures in 2016.
We are now in the second implementation cycle and are in the process of revising the Initial Assessment under Articles 8, 9 and 10 of the Directive. We are seeking your views in relation to the draft update.
What we are looking for?
The Public Consultation document can be downloaded from the link in the documents section of this web page. Your views are being sought on the following elements set out in this document namely: the assessment of the marine environment, the characteristics for good environmental status, the proposed environmental targets and associated threshold values.
This feedback will be used to inform the preparation of the final assessment report including setting environmental targets and associated threshold values. There will be further consultations after this one where we will seek your views on the revisions to the monitoring programme and programme of measures. A questionnaire document outlining the aspects where input is sought is available to download, complete and return.
