Island Voting

There are a number of inhabited islands around the coast of Ireland. During elections, polling places are set up on 19 of these islands, so residents do not have to travel to the mainland to vote.

Part 8 of the Electoral Reform Act 2022 amended the electoral codes to provide that polling on these islands will take place on the same day as the rest of the country. Where necessary, there is facility to shorten polling hours on these islands in the event that local circumstances require it.

Islands voting in General Elections 2024

On 15th November, 2024, the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien TD, made an Order appointing the hours during which polling shall take place on certain islands in the general election of 29 November 2024.

The voting times for islands in the polls in the General election are:

Constituency - Cork South-West

Bear Island 07.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m.
Clear Island 07.00 a.m. to 3.30 p.m.
Dursey Island 10.00 a.m. to 3.30 p.m.
Hare Island 07.00 a. m. to 5.30 p.m.
Long Island, Schull 07.00 a. m. to 5.30 p.m.
Sherkin Island 07.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m.
Whiddy Island 07.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m.

Constituency - Donegal

Arranmore 10.00 a.m. – 7.30 p.m.
Gola 11.00 a.m. - 3.00 p.m.
Inishbofin 11.00 a.m. - 3.00 p.m.
Inishfree 11.00 a.m. - 3.00 p.m.
Tory Island 11.00 a.m. - 3.00 p.m.

Constituency - Galway West

Inishmore 07.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m.
