Polling Day Order
On Friday, 08 November 2024, the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien TD, signed the Polling Day Order in respect of the General Election to be held on Friday, 29 November 2024.
How the Dáil is elected
On Friday 29 November 2024, the electorate will elect 173 TDs to the 34th Dáil. The Ceann Comhairle is deemed without any actual election to be elected. Voting will take place in 43 constituencies.

PR-STV
Voting at a Dáil election is by secret ballot using the PR-STV system (proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote). PR-STV allows the elector to indicate their first and subsequent choices for the candidates on the ballot paper.
Spending limits and reimbursement amount for Dáil candidates
Election spending incurred by a candidate at a Dáil election must be below the following limits:
- €38,900 in a 3-seat constituency
- €48,600 in a 4-seat constituency
- €58,350 in a 5-seat constituency

Posters
Postering can begin from the date the Polling Day Order is signed. Posters must be removed within 7 days of polling day.
Section 140 of the Electoral Act 1992 provides that every notice, bill, poster or similar document having reference to a Dáil election or distributed for the purpose of advancing the candidature of any candidate, shall bear upon its face the name and address of the printer and of the publisher.
Island Voting
On 15th November, 2024, the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien TD, made an Order appointing the hours during which polling shall take place on certain islands in the general election on 29 November 2024.
Seanad General Election
Minister O’Brien makes Orders appointing dates and times for Seanad Éireann general election
The next Seanad General Election will commence in December 2024. Six University seats will be elected by graduates of the National University of Ireland (3 seats) and graduates and Foundation and non-Foundation Scholars of the University of Dublin (Trinity College Dublin) (3 seats). Forty-three Panel Members will be elected from panels of candidates representing specified vocational interests. They will be elected by Members of the incoming Dáil, the outgoing Seanad and members of elected councils.
