What the Housing Adaptation Grant for Disabled People is
The Housing Adaptation Grant for Disabled People scheme provides grant aid to applicants to assist in the carrying out of works that are reasonably necessary for the purposes of rendering a house more suitable for the accommodation needs of a disabled person. The scheme is administered by local authorities..
The effective maximum grant under the scheme is €40,000, which may cover up to 100% of the approved cost of works, whichever is the lesser.
Who can apply
A disabled person who requires adaptation works to render a house more suitable for their accommodation needs or a homeowner on behalf of a disabled person who is a member of the household.
Income threshold means test
Applicants will be assessed on the basis of household income, that is, the annual gross income of the registered property owner (and spouse) in the previous tax year.

The effective maximum grant of €40,000 to cover up to 100% of the cost of works, may be available to applicants with gross household incomes of up to €37,500 per annum, tapering to 30% for applicants with gross household incomes of between €62,501 to €75,000 per annum.
Types of work allowable
The types of works allowable under the scheme can be varied and may include:
- a ramp or other ways to access your home
- bathroom facilities such as an accessible shower or a downstairs toilet
- a stair lift or through floor lift
- fixed track hoists (excluding any servicing, maintenance and training costs)
- space for wheelchair access
- an extension (typically for a bedroom or bathroom to accommodate a person with a disability)
