Housing Adaptation Grants for Older People and Disabled People (Private Houses)

Funding is provided to local authorities in respect of the Housing Adaptation Grants for Older People and Disabled People to assist eligible people in private houses to make their accommodation more suitable to their needs.

The suite of grants available to private home owners are 85% funded by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, with a 15% contribution from the resources of each local authority. Three distinct grant types are available as follows:

  • The Housing Adaptation Grant for Disabled People assists disabled people to have necessary adaptations, or improvement works carried out in order to make their accommodation more suitable for their needs
  • The Mobility Aids Grant is available to fast track grants to cover a basic suite of works to address the mobility problems of a member of a household. Qualifying works include the provision of stair lifts, level access showers, fixed track hoists, access ramps, grab rails and some minor adaptation works; and
  • The Housing Aid for Older People Grant assists older people living in poor housing conditions to have necessary repairs or improvements carried out. Grant eligible works include structural repairs or improvements, re-wiring, provision of water supply and sanitary facilities, repair or provision of heating and repairs to or replacement of windows and doors.
