The Minister for Justice has responsibility for immigration in Ireland through two organisations:
The Immigration Service Delivery’s Role
The Immigration Service is an executive office of the Department of Justice. It is responsible for the administrative functions of the Minister for Justice in the areas of:
- immigration
- visa
- international protection
- citizenship matters
The Garda National Immigration Bureau’s Role
The Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB) is an office of An Garda Síochána (the Irish Police force). The office is responsible for all Garda matters that relate to immigration on a national basis such as:
- border control
- registrations
- granting permission to remain
- deportations and investigations (illegal immigration and human trafficking)
