< Justice - What we do < Your Community Safety

Community Safety is about people being safe, and feeling safe, within their communities. Community Safety goes beyond traditional, high visibility, policing and the Commission on the Future of Policing in Ireland report recognised that preventing crime and harm and making our communities safer does not rest with An Garda Síochána and the Department of Justice alone, but requires a whole of government approach.

The Department of Justice leads on a number of Community Safety policy initiatives:

The Irish Prison Service is responsible for the safe and secure custody of persons held on remand, on immigration matters and people sentenced to prison

Probation Officers become involved in the criminal justice process between the trial and the sentencing phases.

GYDPs are community-based multi-agency crime prevention initiatives

Independent Prison Monitoring

Financial assistance for qualifying costs associated with community CCTV, including both capital and minor maintenance costs

Neighbourhood watch, Community crime prevention

The Department of Justice maintains the Roll of Peace Commissioners

The Inspector carries out regular inspections of the 14 prisons and places of detention in the State
