Funding in focus: Sign language café at Deaf Village Ireland

Watch the video below to find out more about the positive impact the Deaf Café is making in the local community.

The Department of Rural and Community Development supports numerous investment schemes that benefit communities right across Ireland.

One of these is the Community Centres Investment Fund, which has allocated more than €65 million to community centre projects around the country since 2022.

Ireland’s first ever Irish Sign Language café is one of the projects to benefit from this fund.

Located in Deaf Village Ireland in Cabra, Dublin, the facility provides members of the Deaf Community with a modern space in which to meet and socialise.

It has been embraced by the local community and is a vibrant and inclusive social hub that is creating employment and giving people the chance to use and learn Irish Sign Language.

"It's good for the deaf community and for the hearing people to communicate together," explains Deaf Village Ireland manager Sylvia Nolan.

"It feels like an inclusive place and a welcoming place for everyone."
