Minister of State Canney Presents Awards to Longford Primary School Pupils

‘Primary School Digital Project’ aims to raise awareness of broadband technology in Longford

Item was unpublished or removed Seán Canney TD, today (Thursday 2 May 2019) joined Longford’s Cathaoirleach, Luie McEntire, and the Council members, at the Council Offices to present prizes to the winners of the Primary School Digital Project.

The Project, devised and run by Longford County Council and supported with funding from the Department of Rural and Community Development’s Digital Innovation Programme, aims to champion the adoption and use of broadband technology in everyday life in County Longford.

Fifth and sixth class pupils were asked to answer a small number of technical questions about internet speeds and services and then write a short story about what they imagine it will be like to live in Longford when everyone has access to high-speed broadband.

Speaking to the children about their entries, Minister Canney said:

“You identified key areas like health services, remote working, farming technology and emergency response services.

"You also saw how broadband connectivity could help tackle loneliness, especially for the elderly and also the way in which it can offer greater opportunities for access to education and growing businesses.

“This shows that you are already thinking ahead. You are the next generation, and it is hugely positive to see that you are already thinking about how your future – and everyone else’s – can be improved by being connected.

“Video gaming, YouTube, Netflix and general streaming services also seem to be quite high on your agendas!”

First, second and third place prizes were awarded to primary schools from each of Longford’s three municipal districts. First prize in each district was a One4all gift card worth €500 for the winning schools, €250 for second place and €150 for third place.

Speaking after the event, Minister Canney said:

“I was really impressed with the effort and creativity that the children put into this project. They have such a clear understanding of the value that technology can add to our lives and they did an incredible job of writing persuasive, insightful and thought-provoking stories. They were a joy to spend time with and I’m sure that their parents and teachers are very proud.”

Notes to Editor:

The Digital Innovation Programme is an initiative of the Department of Rural and Community Development. It is designed to encourage local authority led projects that support digital development. These projects must promote, support, or otherwise advance at least one of the following seven pillars:

  • Digital Skills
  • Infrastructure
  • Innovation & Entrepreneurship
  • Digital Economy & Employment
  • Digital Services
  • Community & Culture
  • Digital Transition

Projects must provide a public benefit. Projects that cut across more than one of the pillars are particularly welcome.

Details of all successful Digital Innovation Programme projects can be found here.
