“It is difficult to overstate the value of local agricultural shows to rural communities. The Irish Shows Association has seen huge changes in Irish life and society since it was established over 85 years ago, but one thing has remained unchanged: the agricultural shows are still an integral part of community life in rural areas.

“They exhibit the best of rural life, and confirm the great sense of pride which participants have in their livestock and displays. I am always heartened by the level of community participation in these events and the support shown for the shows by neighbouring communities.

“This is one of the factors that I took into consideration when I provided support of €812,000 towards the running costs of up to 120 shows during 2018.

“I want to congratulate the Irish Shows Association and everyone involved in the publication of the yearbook, summarising the shows which will take place this year around the country.

“I know that the association members do great work in their local areas and they should be very pleased that their work has such a positive impact on adding to the quality of life for so many rural communities across the country.

“I believe that together we will continue to develop Ireland at a regional and local level with the financial support of the schemes managed by my department.

“I am determined, as minister, to ensure that the positive contribution of rural communities all over Ireland is highlighted and presented as an indication of the real potential in our rural communities.”
