Doherty welcomes fall in unemployment rate for June 2017

Employment and Social Protection Minister, Regina Doherty, TD has welcomed the Unemployment Rate for June which is 6.3%, published by the CSO today. This is down from 8.3% in June 2016.

The seasonally adjusted number of people who were unemployed in June 2017 was 139,400, down by 42,100 when compared with June 2016.

Minister Doherty said: “The figures published today are concrete evidence that Ireland is a strengthening economy where employment and self-employment are continuing to grow.

“As Minister with responsibility for Employment and Social Protection, I will be working hard to ensure that the Department continues to provide strong supports through its Intreo services to enable jobseekers find work and to assist employers find employees to suit their vacancies.”

In June 2017 the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 7.1% for males, unchanged from May 2017 and down from 9.4% in June 2016.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for females in June 2017 was 5.4%, down from 5.5% in May 2017 and down from 6.9% in June 2016.

The seasonally adjusted number of males unemployed in June 2017 was 85,600. This is a decrease of 200 when compared to the May 2017 figure of 85,800. In June 2017 the seasonally adjusted number of females unemployed was 53,800, a decrease of 700 when compared to May 2017.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for persons aged 15-24 years (youth unemployment rate) was 11.9% in June 2017, an increase from 11.8% in May 2017.
