Understanding Childhood Deprivation in Ireland

The ‘Understanding Childhood Deprivation in Ireland’ report uses data from the 2009 Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC) survey to examine child-specific deprivation – deprivation as it specifically affects children. For the first time on a national sample, the authors are able to ask how well the national measure of basic deprivation identifies children exposed to child-specific deprivation. The report examines the risk factors for child-specific deprivation. It also considers the overlap between child-specific and basic deprivation: to what extent are there (a) children in deprived households (according to the basic measure) who are protected from child-specific deprivation and (b) children in non-deprived households exposed to child-specific deprivation.

This report is an output of the research programme funded by the Department of Social Protection with the Economic and Social Research Institute to monitor poverty trends under the National Action Plan for Social Inclusion. This programme provides evidence and analysis to inform policy.
